CALL FOR PAPERS
AUSTRALIAN MOBILITIES

The 2023 biennial conference of the German Association for Australian Studies (GASt) will focus on Australian Mobilities, on the mobility of people, species, things and ideas across and beyond the Australian continent. We welcome proposals from a variety of disciplines and subject areas, including Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Cultural Studies, Film and Media Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Museum Studies, Musicology, Political Science, Queer Studies, Religious Studies and Sociology as well as creative contributions from the Visual and Performing Arts.
Papers may address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Indigenous mobilities, past and present
- Indigenous sovereignty and colonial mobility
- Cultural heritage and (im)mobility: museums and repatriation
- Cultural mobility: festivals, exhibitions and artist residencies
- Academic mobility: exchange and internationalisation, including networks for at-risk scholars
- Travelling concepts, genres and disciplines
- Mobility infrastructure: from camel treks to the Ghan, from the Sydney Monorail to alternative mobilities
- Gender, diversity and (im)mobility across the life span
- Moving people and ideas: from the Freedom Ride and the feminist movement to Sydney Mardi Gras and WorldPride
- Tourism, mobility and sustainability
- Climate change and mobility
- the Covid Pandemic and (im)mobility
- Other forms of mobility, including virtual mobility
The conference will include a work-in-progress session and a panel on teaching Australian Studies outside Australia. The organisers specifically wish to encourage and include emerging scholars as well as at-risk academics. Please submit a 250-word abstract and a short bio note (indicating name, institutional affiliation and contact details, max. 200 words) by 15 May 2023.
Decisions on accepted papers will be communicated by 15 May 2023.
