Call for Expressions of Interest for a Proposed Panel on “Literary Journalism and Asia” at the Nineteenth International Conference for Literary Journalism Studies

Call for Expressions of Interest for a Proposed Panel on

“Literary Journalism and Asia”

The Nineteenth International Conference for Literary Journalism Studies (IALJS-19)

Expressions of Interest are invited to join a panel at the forthcoming 199h International Conference for Literary Journalism Studies, at the Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York

during 28-30 May, 2025. The title of the proposed panel is “Literary Journalism and Asia”.

We invite proposals for panel presentations analysing the rich and diverse traditions and practices of reportage and non-fiction writing in Asia. This panel aims to explore the Asian perspectives on journalism as literature, which have been largely under-represented in the current landscape of literary journalism. It seeks to define Asian literary journalism, and examine how it differs from, and relates to, the literary journalism and reportage produced in other regions of the world, including Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australasia.

Abstracts proposed for the panel will also be considered for an edited collection on Asian Literary Journalism which has preliminary interest from an academic publisher.

We encourage submissions on a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to:

* Analyses of literary journalism emanating from different Asian regions

* Analyses of the work of Asian literary journalists, particularly those largely unknown outside their own regions/countries

* Literary journalism and the history of Asia and its individual nations and regions

* Comparisons between literary journalism adopted by different countries/areas in Asia

* Comparisons between literary journalism as it is practised in Asia and other areas of the world

* Literary journalism relating to Asian communities both within and outside Asia

* Social justice and the literary journalism of Asia

* Genre writing (e.g. travel, food, memoir) from these regions as literary journalism

* Ethics, empathy, and change in Asian literary journalism.

Please send the proposed title, 100-words abstract, and bio notes to Willa McDonald willa.mcdonald@mq.edu.au and Daozhi Xu daozhi.xu@mq.edu.au

The submission deadline is 30 November 2024Midnight Pacific Standard Time.

For more details of the IALJS-19 conference, please see the attached Call for Papers.

If you have any questions about this session or the submission process, please don’t hesitate to contact Willa McDonald or Daozhi Xu.

Submissions by graduate students are strongly encouraged.

We look forward to your contributions to the evolving and exciting field of Asian literary journalism.
