The International Australian Studies Association is delighted to announce the Visiting Professors of Australian Studies at the University of Tokyo Centre for Pacific and American Studies for 2025-26 and 2026-27: Associate Professor Catherine Bond, UNSW (2025-26) & Professor Paula Gerber, Monash (2026-27).
Catherine Bond is an Associate Professor in the School of Law, Society, & Criminology at the University of New South Wales, and has been appointed Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at University of Tokyo’s Centre for Pacific and American Studies for 2025 to 2026.
In her time as Visiting Professor, Catherine’s research aims to explore the protection of symbols of national significance in Japan and how these are protected by law or left unregulated. This work will further understanding and foster a mutual appreciation of each country’s culture and heritage.
Paula Gerber is a Professor in the Faculty of Law at Monash University and has been appointed Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at University of Tokyo’s Centre for Pacific and American Studies for 2026 to 2027. Paula has worked as a lawyer in London and Los Angeles, and as a visiting scholar in Kosovo, The Netherlands, Italy, Fiji and China. She is excited about the opportunity to broaden and deepen her cross-cultural communication skills and increase her knowledge and understanding of Japan’s laws, culture and perspectives around diverse sexualities and gender identities
As part of her appointment in the University of Tokyo’s Centre for Pacific and American Studies, Paula aims to strengthen connections between Japanese and Australian scholars and advocates working on the rights of LGBTIQA+ people, and to collaborate on common challenges and opportunities relating to human rights protection in Australia, Japan and the Asia Pacific region, more broadly.
